My first Thailand vacation was in 2019 β€” two weeks with a loose plan and a very small budget. I came back in 2022 and again in early 2025, and each time the country managed to surprise me in ways I had stopped expecting from places I had already been. Thailand is genuinely one of the most varied travel destinations on earth: Bangkok alone could fill a week, Chiang Mai runs at a completely different pace, and the southern islands look like something from a geography textbook you would not quite believe. The challenge is not finding things to do. It is choosing what to leave out.

A few practical anchors before we get into it. Thailand had roughly 28 million international visitors in 2023 and the infrastructure reflects that β€” flights are cheap, guesthouses are plentiful, and street food costs less than anywhere else in the region. But the country rewards travellers who read past the first page of recommendations. The Grand Palace gets 8 million visitors a year; the Ayutthaya ruins 90 minutes north, a former capital spanning over 4 centuries of Thai history, is quieter on a Tuesday than most European cathedrals on a weekday. That gap between obvious and slightly less obvious defines a good Thailand vacation.

This guide covers where to go, what things actually cost in 2026, a realistic 10-day itinerary that does not assume you want to see everything at once, what to eat beyond pad thai, and the safety realities that do and do not apply to most travellers. I have tried to be specific about prices and places rather than vague about vibes.

Top Destinations for a Thailand Vacation: 6 Places to Prioritise

Thailand has 76 provinces and thousands of temples. These six are where I would tell a first-timer to spend their days β€” each with a specific reason to go and a real number attached to it.

🏯

Grand Palace, Bangkok

A 218,400 mΒ² walled complex built in 1782 as the official residence of the Thai royal family. It contains Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), whose centrepiece is a 66 cm jade Buddha carved from a single block of stone. Receives approximately 8 million visitors a year β€” get here before 9am or the queues extend 45 minutes past the ticket gate. Entry includes access to Wat Pho across the road (optional).

Chiang Mai Old City

A 700-year-old moat city in northern Thailand containing more than 300 temples within its 2.25 kmΒ² perimeter. Wat Chedi Luang has a partially restored chedi built in 1411 that once stood 82 metres tall before an earthquake reduced it to 42 metres in 1545. The Sunday Walking Street market on Wualai Road stretches 1.2 km and is one of the better craft markets in Southeast Asia. The pace here is completely different from Bangkok.

Railay Beach, Krabi

Accessible only by longtail boat (15 min from Ao Nang, ~100 THB), Railay sits inside a 450-metre-wide peninsula surrounded by 200-metre limestone karst cliffs on three sides. There are four distinct beaches: Railay West (swimming), Railay East (mangroves, low tide), Phra Nang Cave Beach (cave shrine), and Tonsai (rock climbing, 700+ established routes). No cars. No motorbikes.

Ayutthaya Historical Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site 80 km north of Bangkok β€” the ruins of a royal capital that was home to 1 million people at its peak in the 17th century, making it one of the largest cities on earth at the time. The park covers 289 hectares and contains temples, palaces, and statues from the period 1351–1767 AD. The decapitated Buddha heads lodged inside fig tree roots at Wat Mahathat are among the most photographed images in Southeast Asia.

Doi Inthanon National Park

Home to Thailand’s highest peak at 2,565 metres above sea level β€” cold enough in December that you need a jacket at the summit. The park covers 482 kmΒ² and contains 384 bird species, the highest count of any single location in Thailand. Two Royal Chedis built in 1987 and 1992 mark the summit area. The Ang Ka Nature Trail loop takes 25 minutes and passes through cloud forest at 2,400 m.

Koh Tao, Gulf of Thailand

A 21 kmΒ² island with more dive shops per square kilometre than almost anywhere on earth. The island issues around 40,000 PADI open-water certifications annually β€” the most of any single dive destination worldwide. Water visibility averages 20–30 m, reef depth ranges from 5–30 m, and whale sharks pass between March and May. An open-water course costs $300–350 and takes 3–4 days. The only reason to come here is diving or snorkeling.

Which pool-villa and all-inclusive properties in Phuket and Koh Samui actually deliver on the price β€” and which ones to avoid.

Best Time for a Thailand Vacation: Season by Region

Thailand’s weather varies significantly by region and time of year. The north and central areas follow one pattern; the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Railay) and the Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Tao) follow different monsoon cycles that are almost perfectly offset. This is the honest version:

Season Months Conditions Best Regions
Peak (Cool & Dry) Nov – Feb 25–33Β°C; low humidity; almost no rain Everywhere β€” both coasts, Bangkok, Chiang Mai
Shoulder (Hot) Mar – May 35–40Β°C; increasingly hot & hazy Andaman coast still dry; Gulf of Thailand getting rough
Southwest Monsoon Jun – Oct Heavy rain on Andaman coast; Gulf coast drier Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan; avoid Phuket/Krabi
Northeast Monsoon Nov – Jan (Gulf) Rain shifts to Gulf coast; Andaman now clear Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi); Bangkok; north Thailand

Practical note: If you want both Phuket/Krabi and Koh Samui in the same trip, November through April is the only window when both coasts are reliably dry simultaneously.

Getting to Thailand & Around During Your Vacation

Most long-haul travellers fly into Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK), which handles around 65 million passengers annually. Direct flights from London take 11–12 hours; from Los Angeles, 17–20 hours with one stop. Internal transport in Thailand is cheap and reliable once you land.

✈️

Domestic Flights

Bangkok to Chiang Mai: $25–55 on AirAsia or Lion Air (1.5 hrs). Bangkok to Phuket: $30–70 (1.5 hrs). Book 2–4 weeks ahead for the best prices. Bangkok also has a second airport, Don Mueang (DMK), used by budget carriers.

πŸš‚

Overnight Train

Bangkok to Chiang Mai: 12–13 hours, departs Hua Lamphong or Bang Sue station at 6pm. Sleeper class from $20–30. Slow, but you save a night’s accommodation and wake up in the north. Book via Thai Railways online.

πŸ“±

Grab (Ride-Hailing)

Grab works in all major Thai cities and is significantly cheaper and more reliable than negotiating with tuk-tuk drivers. Airport Suvarnabhumi to Sukhumvit: ~250–350 THB ($7–10). Always use the app meter price, not street quotes.

🚀

Island Ferries

Phuket to Phi Phi: ~400 THB by speedboat (45 min) or 200 THB by slow ferry (2 hrs). Krabi to Railay: 100 THB longtail (15 min). Chumphon to Koh Tao: 600–800 THB by night ferry (6 hrs) or speedboat (2 hrs).

Thailand Vacation Budget: What Things Actually Cost in 2026

Thailand is still one of the best-value destinations in Asia for mid-range travellers. Budget backpacker costs have risen since 2019 β€” hostel dorms that were $6 now run $10–14 β€” but the mid-range tier remains exceptional value by any global benchmark. A decent private hotel room with a pool costs $40–70 in Chiang Mai and $50–90 in Bangkok.

💰 Daily Budget Breakdown — Thailand Vacation 2026

Category Budget Mid-Range Luxury
🏨 Accommodation $10–18/night $45–90/night $180–600+
🍽️ Food & Drink $8–12/day $20–35/day $70–120/day
🚗 Transport $3–5/day $10–18/day $30–60/day
🏟️ Activities $5–8/day $20–30/day $60–100+
🛍️ Shopping/Misc $5/day $15/day $50/day
📊 DAILY TOTAL ~$31–48 ~$110–173 $390–930+

🍜

Eat from Street Stalls, Not Tourist Menus

A bowl of khao man gai (poached chicken and rice) from a plastic-stool street stall in Bangkok costs 50–60 THB ($1.40–1.70). The same dish at a restaurant with an English menu runs 180–250 THB. Eat where you see Thais eating lunch.

πŸš†

Take the Night Train Instead of Flying

Bangkok to Chiang Mai overnight sleeper: ~$25. The same route by domestic flight is $40–60 plus airport transfers. The train saves accommodation costs for that night and deposits you at the city centre station, not an airport 20 km out of town.

πŸ’³

Use a No-Fee Card and Withdraw Large Amounts

Thai ATMs charge a 220 THB ($6.30) flat foreign fee per withdrawal regardless of the amount. Withdraw 10,000–20,000 THB at once to minimise that cost. Wise and Charles Schwab US reimburse ATM fees; standard UK/EU travel cards do not.

Food: What to Eat on a Thailand Vacation

Thai cuisine varies by region in ways that English-language menus almost never convey. Bangkok skews toward central Thai food (sweeter, more coconut milk); the north around Chiang Mai uses more bitter herbs, fermented meat, and sticky rice; the south gets more turmeric, dried fish, and heat. Here are the six dishes to know and what they actually cost:

Dish What It Is Stall Price / Restaurant
Khao Man Gai Poached chicken served over rice cooked in the same stock, with dark ginger dipping sauce and clear broth. Thailand’s most common midday meal. 50–70 THB stall / 120–180 THB restaurant
Tom Yum Goong Hot and sour prawn soup with lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime, and Thai chillies. Cleaner and more acidic than most versions served outside Thailand. 120–180 THB local / 250–350 THB tourist area
Som Tum Green papaya salad pounded to order in a clay mortar β€” shredded green papaya, lime, fish sauce, palm sugar, dried shrimp, chilli. Specify how spicy you want it or expect to cry. 40–60 THB stall / 80–120 THB restaurant
Pad See Ew Wide rice noodles stir-fried in sweet dark soy sauce with egg, Chinese broccoli, and your choice of protein. Better than pad thai at most street stalls; less photogenic. 60–80 THB stall / 140–200 THB restaurant
Gaeng Keow Wan Green curry β€” Thai basil, small green aubergines, coconut milk, fish sauce, palm sugar. Far less sweet in Thailand than anywhere else. Typically eaten over rice, not noodles. 70–100 THB local / 180–280 THB resort
Khao Niaow Ma Muang Mango sticky rice β€” glutinous rice cooked in sweetened coconut milk, served warm with fresh ripe mango and a drizzle of salted coconut cream. Best April–June when mangoes peak. 50–80 THB market / 120 THB cafΓ©

10-Day Thailand Vacation Itinerary

This plan covers Bangkok, the north (Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya), and the south (Krabi or Koh Samui). It is not an exhaustive list of every temple in Thailand β€” it is the version I would recommend to someone doing their first Thailand vacation who has limited time but wants genuine variety.

1

Day 1 — Bangkok Arrival & Orientation

Afternoon: Grab from Suvarnabhumi to your hotel in Sukhumvit or Silom (~300–380 THB, 30–60 min depending on traffic). Get a DTAC or AIS SIM card in the arrivals hall β€” 300 THB for 30 days of unlimited data, which you will use constantly.
Evening: Walk the food stalls along Sukhumvit Soi 38 (closes around 10pm). Khao man gai and pad see ew for under 150 THB total. Rest β€” the first day in Bangkok is not the time to try to do everything.

2

Day 2 — Grand Palace, Wat Pho & Chao Phraya

Morning: Grand Palace complex by 8:30am before tour groups arrive (500 THB entry, includes Wat Phra Kaew). Dress code enforced: shoulders and knees covered. Sarongs available to rent at the gate for 200 THB deposit.
Afternoon: Wat Pho (200 THB) directly across the road β€” home to the 46-metre Reclining Buddha, and one of Thailand’s oldest traditional massage schools (traditional massage 420 THB/hour on site).
Evening: River taxi along the Chao Phraya (15 THB per stop) to Wat Arun at sunset β€” best viewed from the opposite bank with a riverside drink at a terrace bar.

3

Day 3 — Ayutthaya Day Trip

Morning: Take the 7:20am train from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong station to Ayutthaya (20 THB, 1.5 hrs). Hire a tuk-tuk at the station for a 3-hour loop of the main ruins: Wat Phra Mahathat (50 THB), Wat Phra Si Sanphet (50 THB), Viharn Phra Mongkol Bophit (free).
Afternoon: Wat Chai Watthanaram on the west bank is the most photogenic ruin in Thailand β€” best light is 4–5pm. Return train to Bangkok departs around 5pm.
Evening: Chatuchak area for dinner; JJ Green Night Market if it falls on a weekend.

4

Day 4 — Fly to Chiang Mai

Morning: Early flight to Chiang Mai (~$30–50 on AirAsia or Nok Air from Don Mueang, 1.5 hrs). Check in near the Old City moat β€” Nimman area for coffee shops; Old City for temples and walking distance to Night Bazaar.
Afternoon: Walk the Old City perimeter (2.25 km moat). Enter Wat Chedi Luang (40 THB) and speak with the monks β€” the Monk Chat programme runs daily 9am–6pm and is one of the genuinely interesting cultural exchanges available on a Thailand vacation.
Evening: Sunday Walking Street on Wualai Road if you arrive on a Sunday (6–11pm, 1.2 km of craft stalls). Otherwise, Chiang Mai Night Bazaar near Chang Khlan Road.

5

Day 5 — Doi Suthep & Chiang Mai Food

Morning: Songthaew (red shared truck, 50 THB per person) up Doi Suthep mountain to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep β€” a working 14th-century temple at 1,073 m elevation with city views. 30 THB entry. Arrive before 9am to beat tour buses.
Afternoon: Return to the Old City. Khao Soi Khun Yai on Chang Moi Road for khao soi (Chiang Mai’s signature curry-broth noodle soup, 60 THB). Rest at a cafe in the Nimman district.
Evening: Cooking class at Thai Farm Cooking School (Faham area, 1,500 THB, includes market tour) β€” one of the better uses of an evening in northern Thailand.

6

Day 6 — Fly South to Krabi or Koh Samui

Morning: Fly Chiang Mai to Krabi (~$50–80, 2.5 hrs via BKK connection) or Chiang Mai to Koh Samui (~$70–100). Most flights connect through Bangkok.
Afternoon: If Krabi: take a longtail to Railay Beach (100 THB, 15 min from Ao Nang pier) and check into a bungalow or resort inside the peninsula. If Koh Samui: settle into Chaweng or Lamai beach area.
Evening: Sunset drinks at Railay viewpoint or beachside dinner with fresh grilled fish (300–500 THB/person at Krabi seafood restaurants on Ao Nang promenade).

7

Day 7 — Islands & Rock Climbing

Morning: 4-island snorkel tour from Ao Nang or Railay (600–900 THB/person, half day) β€” Koh Poda, Koh Gai (Chicken Island), Tup Island, and Phra Nang Cave Beach. Visibility averages 10–15 m.
Afternoon: Rock climbing on Railay’s limestone walls β€” Hot Rock or King Climbers both offer intro half-day lessons for 1,500–1,800 THB including equipment. Railay has 700+ bolted sport routes; the easiest start at 5a and offer sea views from 40 m up.
Evening: Phra Nang Cave Beach at low tide β€” the cave shrine decorated with wooden offerings is unlike anything else on the Andaman coast.

8

Day 8 — Phi Phi Islands Day Trip

Full day: Speedboat day trip from Ao Nang or Krabi Town to Phi Phi Islands (~1,200–1,500 THB/person). The Phi Phi archipelago covers 8 kmΒ² total β€” Phi Phi Don (inhabited, party beach) and Phi Phi Leh (uninhabited, Maya Bay). Maya Bay was closed for reef recovery 2018–2022; it now limits visitors to 300/day in the morning. Snorkeling at Loh Samah Bay and Pileh Lagoon has recovered significantly since the closure.

9

Day 9 — Beach Day or Thai Massage

Morning: Railay West Beach for a slow morning β€” the least-crowded it gets is before 9am and after 4pm. Rent a kayak from the pier (200 THB/hour) and paddle around the headland to Tonsai Beach.
Afternoon: Two-hour traditional Thai massage at a local spa (400–600 THB on Railay). This is significantly cheaper than anything available in Bangkok tourist zones.
Evening: Fire show on Railay East beach, which happens most evenings from around 7pm. Drinks at the Last Bar.

10

Day 10 — Final Morning & Departure

Morning: Last breakfast at a beachside cafΓ© (full Thai breakfast with coffee: 150–200 THB). Longtail back to Ao Nang, then shuttle to Krabi Airport (200 THB shared minibus, 45 min). Fly to Bangkok for international connection β€” allow 3 hours minimum for Suvarnabhumi international departure.

➕ How to Extend Your Thailand Vacation

Add 3 extra days for Koh Tao (Gulf of Thailand) if diving is your priority β€” the island issues 40,000+ PADI certifications per year and an open-water course runs $300–350 over 3–4 days. Alternatively, add Pai in northern Thailand (3 hrs north of Chiang Mai by minibus) for hot springs, waterfalls, and a much slower pace at an elevation where evenings are genuinely cold in December–January. See the Tourism Authority of Thailand for current festival dates and regional event calendars.

If the southern leg of your Thailand vacation is centred on Phuket, this goes much deeper on which beaches, neighbourhoods and resorts are actually worth your time.

Safety & Practical Tips for a Thailand Vacation

πŸ”’

Safety Level

US State Dept Level 1 (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, tourist areas). Level 2 in the southernmost provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla β€” avoid those unless you have a specific reason to go. The main tourist risks are scams (tuk-tuk gem scam, closed temple scam), motorbike accidents, and rip currents on unsupervised beaches.

πŸ’‰

Health & Vaccinations

No required vaccinations for most nationalities. Recommended: Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Tetanus. Tap water is not safe to drink anywhere in Thailand β€” use bottled water or a filtered bottle. Pharmacies are excellent and cheap (paracetamol, antibiotics, antihistamines all available without prescription). Travel insurance is strongly advised.

πŸ›‚

Visa & Entry

As of 2024, US, UK, EU, Australian and Canadian passport holders receive a 60-day visa exemption on arrival, extendable once for 30 days at any immigration office (1,900 THB). Passport must be valid for 6 months beyond your stay. Check current rules on the Thai e-Visa portal before travel.

πŸ’΅

Currency & ATMs

Thai ATMs charge 220 THB ($6.30) flat fee per withdrawal regardless of amount β€” withdraw 10,000–20,000 THB at once to minimise this. Kasikorn (KBank) ATMs tend to offer slightly better exchange rates than others. Wise debit card or Charles Schwab (US) reimburse ATM fees. Most tourist businesses accept cards; street vendors and markets are cash-only.

πŸ“ž

Emergency Numbers

Police: 191. Ambulance / Emergency: 1669. Tourist Police (English-speaking): 1155. Fire: 199. The Tourist Police line is particularly useful for scam-related issues β€” they operate 24 hours and respond faster than regular police to tourist complaints.

πŸ“Ά

Mobile & Internet

AIS and DTAC (now merged as NTPLC) both offer tourist SIM cards: 299–349 THB for 30 days of unlimited data at the airport arrivals hall. 4G coverage is excellent in cities and tourist areas; patchy in national park interiors and remote islands. eSIM options via Airalo work well if you prefer not to swap physical cards.

FAQ: Planning Your Thailand Vacation

How many days do I need for a Thailand vacation? +
10–14 days is the minimum to cover Bangkok, one northern destination (Chiang Mai or Ayutthaya), and one southern beach area without feeling rushed. A week-long trip is possible but forces you to choose just one region β€” Bangkok plus either north or south, not both. First-timers who try to pack all three into 7 days typically spend more time in airports and minibuses than anywhere worth being.
Is Thailand safe for a solo vacation? +
Thailand is one of the most well-established solo travel destinations in the world, including for solo female travellers. The main risks are scams rather than violent crime: the closed temple scam (a stranger tells you the temple is closed and offers to take you somewhere else), the tuk-tuk gem scam (you end up at a gem shop after being taken on a “free tour”), and overpriced transport. The Tourist Police hotline (1155) operates 24 hours and is genuinely useful. Avoid the deep south provinces (Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat) regardless.
Can I do a Thailand vacation on a tight budget? +
Yes, more so than most comparable destinations. A backpacker staying in hostel dorms ($10–14/night), eating from street stalls ($8–12/day), and using public transport can travel comfortably on $35–45/day. Even the mid-range β€” a private hotel room with a pool, sit-down restaurant meals, and the occasional boat trip β€” averages $110–150/day. The main budget drains are day tours, alcohol at tourist bars, and choosing a beachfront resort instead of a 5-minute walk back from the beach.
What is the best time of year for a Thailand vacation? +
November through February is the best all-round window β€” both coasts are dry, temperatures are manageable (28–33Β°C), and Bangkok nights can actually feel cool. March and April are also fine on the Andaman coast but get very hot in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. If the Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Tao) is your priority, stay flexible β€” the northeast monsoon hits there November–January while the Andaman coast is clear.
How much does a Thailand vacation cost in total? +
For a 10-day trip from the US or Europe, budget approximately $1,800–2,500 total (including return flights $600–900, accommodation $400–700, food $120–200, transport in-country $150–250, activities $200–350). Mid-range travellers typically spend $2,500–4,000 all-in for 10 days. Luxury travellers at pool-villa resorts spend $5,000–10,000+ without trying hard.
Bangkok or beaches first on a Thailand vacation? +
Start with Bangkok and Chiang Mai, end at the beaches. There are two reasons. First, it is significantly easier to fly home from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi than from Krabi or Koh Samui. Second, after 3–4 days of temples and street food, a slow beach week feels earned rather than like you are avoiding the interesting parts. Travellers who start at the beach often extend and never make it north.
Do I need vaccinations for a Thailand vacation? +
No vaccinations are legally required unless you are arriving from a yellow fever endemic country. Most travel doctors recommend getting current on Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Typhoid before a Thailand vacation; these are particularly relevant if you plan to eat street food regularly (which you should). Rabies pre-exposure vaccination is worth considering if you plan to trek or interact with animals. Tap water is not safe to drink anywhere in Thailand.
Thailand vacation vs Bali β€” which should I choose? +
Thailand wins on variety β€” it has more to see, a wider range of landscapes, better food at cheaper prices, and a larger island selection for beach holidays. Bali wins on atmosphere in one specific zone (Ubud for yoga and wellness, Seminyak for nightlife) and is slightly easier to navigate as a single destination. If this is your first Asia trip and you have 10–14 days: Thailand. If you want one place to decompress for a week with a specific aesthetic: Bali might fit better, depending on what you are looking for.
