I have spent the last decade chasing summer across three continents, and every June friends ask me the same thing: where should we actually go? This is my answer. These are the eight best places to travel in summer 2026, picked for what they deliver between June and September rather than how they look on a screen. I have walked most of these coastlines and trails, paid the 2026 prices, and stood in the ferry queues.
A few things have changed for this summer. The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) reached full operation at every external Schengen border on 10 April 2026, so first-time arrivals now get fingerprints and a facial scan instead of a passport stamp. ETIAS, the separate online authorisation, has a confirmed €20 fee but is not live yet, so you do not need one for a 2026 summer trip. More on that in the entry section below.
I have grouped these places to travel in summer so there is something for most budgets and moods: classic Mediterranean island time, an Alpine reset, the midnight sun, and the cheapest sunshine of the lot in Bali. Prices are per person and reflect what I saw quoted in spring 2026.
The 8 Best Places to Travel in Summer 2026
Each card below lists one hard fact and a realistic daily cost so you can sort them against your own trip fast.
Greek Cyclades (Naxos & Santorini)
Naxos is the largest Cycladic island at 430 km², with sandy beaches that run for kilometres and far thinner crowds than Santorini next door. Pair the two by ferry for the full island-hop.
5–7 days · Beaches & sunsets
Algarve, Portugal
Portugal’s south coast records over 300 sunny days a year, and the cliffs around Lagos and Benagil shelter dozens of hidden coves you reach only by kayak or SUP.
5–7 days · Value beaches
Dalmatian Coast, Croatia
Split’s Diocletian’s Palace was built around 305 AD and is still lived in, with 220 buildings inside the old walls. It makes an easy base for ferries to Hvar and Brač.
6–8 days · Islands & ruins
Amalfi Coast, Italy
A UNESCO site since 1997, the coast packs 13 cliffside towns into a 50 km drive. Positano’s houses stack up roughly 300 m from beach to ridge, so expect stairs everywhere.
4–6 days · Coastal classic
Iceland Ring Road
Route 1 loops the island for 1,322 km, and in June Reykjavík gets around 21 hours of daylight, so you can drive waterfalls and glaciers near midnight.
7–10 days · Midnight sun
Swiss Alps (Grindelwald & Interlaken)
The Jungfrau railway tops out at 3,454 m, Europe’s highest station, and summer opens roughly 1,500 km of marked trails through the Bernese Oberland.
4–6 days · Hiking reset
Banff & the Canadian Rockies
Banff is Canada’s oldest national park, founded in 1885 and covering 6,641 km². Lake Louise and Moraine Lake hit their turquoise peak once the snowmelt fills them in July.
5–7 days · Mountains & lakes
Bali, Indonesia
June to September is Bali’s dry season, the opposite of Europe’s, so it is the one place here where summer means the calmest seas and the Tegallalang rice terraces at their greenest.
7–10 days · Cheapest sun

When to Go: Best Time for These Places to Travel in Summer
Northern Hemisphere summer is not one season but three or four micro-windows. June is the sweet spot for most of this list: warm seas, long days, prices still below the August peak. July and August are hottest and most crowded, which is when I push people toward the Alps, Iceland or Bali instead of the Mediterranean. Here is how the months stack up.
If I had to name one date, I would book the last week of June for Europe and early September if you can be flexible. For current month-by-month detail on the Alps, Switzerland Tourism keeps a good summer and autumn planner.
Getting to These Places to Travel in Summer
Most of this list is reachable on a budget airline plus a ferry, train or short transfer. The two that need a car are Iceland’s Ring Road and the Canadian Rockies, where you also need a Parks Canada pass to enter Banff. Here is the practical version.
Flights
Athens, Lisbon, Split and Naples take cheap European hops (often €40–90 return on Ryanair or easyJet if booked early). Denpasar and Calgary are the long-hauls; lock those 3–4 months out.
Ferries
Greek island hopping runs on Blue Star (slow, €35–45) and SeaJets (fast, €55–75). In Croatia, Jadrolinija and Krilo link Split to Hvar from about €8 (ferry) to €28 (catamaran).
Trains
Switzerland is built for rail. The Interlaken–Grindelwald line runs every 30 minutes; a Swiss Travel Pass (from CHF 244 for 3 days) covers most of it and the cable cars at a discount.
Car & scooter
Iceland’s Ring Road and Banff both need a rental (Iceland from roughly €60/day in summer, book early). In Bali, a scooter is €4–6/day, but only if you are confident and insured.

What These Places to Travel in Summer Cost in 2026
Costs swing hard across this list. The table below is a realistic per-person, per-day breakdown for a typical Mediterranean destination such as Greece, Portugal or Croatia. Read Bali as roughly a third of these numbers and Switzerland or Iceland as nearly double, especially on accommodation and food.
💰 Daily Budget Breakdown — Mediterranean summer, 2026 (per person)
| Category | Budget | Mid-Range | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🏨 Accommodation | €30/night | €90/night | €250+ |
| 🍽️ Food & Drink | €20/day | €45/day | €110/day |
| 🚢 Transport & ferries | €8/day | €20/day | €60/day |
| 🏟️ Activities | €10/day | €30/day | €100+ |
| 🛍️ Misc / shopping | €7/day | €15/day | €40/day |
| 📊 DAILY TOTAL | ~€75 | ~€200 | €560+ |
Shift to early September
Mediterranean room rates commonly fall 25–40% after the August peak while the sea stays warm. One week’s accommodation can drop by several hundred euros.
Eat where the menu has no photos
A few streets back from the harbour, a taverna or tasca runs €12–18 for a full plate instead of €30 on the front. Lunch menus del día also beat dinner prices.
Pick Bali for a long trip
At €25–70 a day, two weeks in Bali can cost less than five days in Switzerland. If your budget is tight but your time is not, it is the obvious call.

A 7-Day Itinerary for One of These Places to Travel in Summer
I have picked the Greek Cyclades as the sample because it is the most flexible: easy flights into Athens, ferries doing the heavy lifting, and a mix of quiet and iconic. This route pairs calm Naxos with famous Santorini.
Day 1 — Athens warm-up
Morning: Acropolis and the Parthenon (summer ticket €20; go at opening to beat the heat).
Afternoon: Wander the Plaka and Anafiotika lanes below the rock.
Evening: Souvlaki at O Thanasis in Monastiraki, about €10 a head.
Day 2 — Ferry to Naxos
Morning: Blue Star ferry from Piraeus to Naxos (about 5 hours, €40).
Afternoon: Settle in Naxos Chora, walk up to the Portara, the marble temple gate from around 530 BC.
Evening: Waterfront dinner; grilled octopus runs €12–15.
Day 3 — Naxos beaches and villages
Morning: Plaka Beach, a long sandy stretch that rarely fills up (free; sunbeds €8–10).
Afternoon: Drive inland to Halki for a Kitron liqueur tasting at Vallindras distillery.
Evening: Dinner at Axiotissa taverna, mains €10–16.
Day 4 — On to Santorini
Morning: SeaJets fast ferry Naxos to Santorini (about 2 hours, €55–70).
Afternoon: Base in Fira; walk the caldera path toward Firostefani.
Evening: Cheap and excellent, Lucky’s Souvlakis in Fira, under €8.
Day 5 — Akrotiri and Oia sunset
Morning: Akrotiri, the Bronze Age town buried by eruption around 1600 BC (entry €12).
Afternoon: Red Beach and a swim.
Evening: Get to Oia 90 minutes before sunset for a spot; dinner after at Ammoudi Bay fish tavernas, €25–35.
Day 6 — Caldera by boat
Morning: Half-day catamaran cruise to the volcanic islets and hot springs (€90–120, lunch usually included).
Afternoon: Recover with a slow swim back near your hotel.
Evening: Wine tasting at a caldera-view winery such as Santo Wines, flights from €20.
Day 7 — Home
Morning: A 45-minute flight back to Athens (from €60) beats the long ferry if you have a connection.
Afternoon: Last gyros at the airport or in town before departure.
➕ How to Extend Your Trip
Add 2–3 days by slotting in Paros or Milos between Naxos and Santorini, both an hour or two by ferry. Milos rewards you with Sarakiniko’s white volcanic rock and Kleftiko’s sea caves, reachable on a day boat from Adamas.

Safety and Practical Tips for Places to Travel in Summer
None of these destinations is high-risk, but summer brings its own issues: heat, busy borders and pickpockets in the obvious tourist crush points. Here is what to actually plan for.
Safety level
Violent crime is rare across all eight. The real risk is pickpocketing in Athens metro, the Amalfi ferry crush and Bali’s Kuta nightlife strip. Keep a slim wallet and a phone strap.
Health & heat
Tap water is safe in Western Europe, Iceland and Switzerland, not in Bali, where you should drink bottled or filtered. Mediterranean July highs hit 35–40°C, so carry water and a hat. Travel insurance is non-negotiable everywhere.
Entry requirements
The EU’s EES has logged biometrics at all Schengen borders since 10 April 2026, so the first crossing takes a little longer. ETIAS (€20) is confirmed but launches in Q4 2026, so it is not needed this summer. Bali grants visa-on-arrival for IDR 500,000 (about €30). Carry a passport valid 6 months beyond travel.
Money & ATMs
Cards work almost everywhere except small Greek tavernas and Bali warungs, so keep some cash. Switzerland uses francs, not euros, and Iceland is close to cashless on the króna. Decline “pay in your home currency” prompts to dodge bad exchange rates.
Emergency numbers
Across the EU and Iceland, dial 112 for any emergency. In Bali it is 112 as well, or 110 for police. In Canada it is 911. Save your country’s embassy number before you fly.
Connectivity
An eSIM (Airalo, Holafly) is the simplest fix; EU plans start around €5 for a few GB. EU residents keep their home plan under roam-like-home rules. Coverage is strong everywhere except remote Iceland and rural Banff valleys.

About This Guide
I put this list together after spending parts of the last several summers across the Cyclades, Croatia, the Alps and Bali, with two separate trips to Greece alone. Every price here reflects what I saw quoted in spring 2026, and I have updated the EES and ETIAS sections to match the rules in force as of June 2026.
