I have been to Bali four times. The first was in 2018, when I spent half a day waiting in line for a photo at Tegallalang rice terraces. The last was early 2025, just after the island recorded 6.3 million foreign arrivals for the year. This bali travel guide is what I actually wish someone had handed me before that first trip.

It is not a brochure. Prices are real, the warnings are specific, and I will tell you which things are worth the hype and which ones are not. Indonesia tourism board links are at the bottom if you want the official line.

One upfront note: a tourist tax of IDR 150,000 (~$10) applies to all international visitors since February 2024. Pay online at the Love Bali portal before flying or at airport kiosks on arrival. Keep the receipt.

Bali Travel Guide: Top Attractions Worth Your Time

Not everything on the highlight reel is worth the traffic to get there. These are the six places I keep returning to — with actual opening times and prices.

🌱

Tegallalang Rice Terraces

A 600-year-old subak irrigation system covering around 300 hectares, UNESCO-listed since 2012. Go before 8am — after 10am the selfie-stick sellers outnumber the farmers. Admission is a voluntary donation (IDR 20,000–50,000), but cafes along the rim charge IDR 50,000–100,000 minimum spend for their viewpoints.

IDR 20–50k donation
6–8am best · North of Ubud

⛲

Tirta Empul Temple

Founded in 962 AD by the Warmadewa dynasty, this is one of the few sacred spring temples where visitors can join Balinese Hindus in purification rituals. Sarong and sash required — provided at the gate for IDR 10,000–20,000. Respectful behavior is expected and mostly observed.

IDR 50,000 entry
9am–5pm · ~25 min from Ubud

🌋

Mount Batur Sunrise Trek

At 1,717 meters, Batur is a manageable 2-hour ascent needing no technical equipment. The summit payoff: crater views, Lake Batur below, and eggs cooked in volcanic steam vents. Last eruption was 2000; the volcano is still active. Licensed guide required: IDR 350,000–500,000 per person.

IDR 350–500k (guided)
Depart 2–3am · Kintamani

⛩

Pura Lempuyang

The Gates of Heaven shot requires 45 minutes minimum in the queue, often 2 hours on weekends. The complex climbs to 1,775 meters across 7 levels and almost nobody goes past the first. Go on a weekday morning — less for the gate photo and more for the actual walk through the forest above it.

IDR 50,000 entry
7am–5pm · ~2 hrs from Ubud

🌇

Tanah Lot

Sea temple on a rock stack — photogenic at any time, genuinely packed at sunset. At low tide you can walk across to the base. The surrounding area is an aggressive souvenir market. Budget IDR 60,000 entry plus IDR 50,000–100,000 for parking.

IDR 60,000 entry
Best: 1hr before sunset · SW coast

🏖

Seminyak Beach

Better swimming than Kuta, less chaotic, strong sunset bar scene. Beach clubs (Ku De Ta, La Plancha) charge IDR 150,000–500,000 minimum spend, but the sand itself is free. Waves are real — check conditions before going in, especially May–September when the swell builds.

Free entry (beach)
Open 24h · 20 min from airport

Bali Travel Guide: Best Time to Visit by Season

There is no genuinely bad month to visit. There are only trade-offs. One thing nobody says clearly: Nyepi (Balinese New Year, usually March) shuts the entire island for 24 hours — no flights in or out, no noise, no lights after dark. If your trip overlaps it, plan for it.

Season Months Weather Crowds & Verdict
Peak (Summer) Jul–Aug Dry, 28–32°C, excellent Very high. Prices 30–50% higher. Book 3+ months out or avoid.
Shoulder (Spring) May–Jun Dry season starts. Clear skies, lower humidity. Moderate, manageable. Strong choice — book 6–8 weeks out.
Shoulder (Autumn) Sep–Oct Still dry, heat easing. Close to perfect. Drops sharply after mid-September. Best weather + sanity combination.
Off-season Nov–Mar Wet season. Daily rain, usually afternoon. Lush and green. Low crowds. Cheapest rates of the year. Fine if you accept rain.

Bali Travel Guide: Getting There & Getting Around

✈

Arriving by Air

Ngurah Rai International (DPS) handles direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, and Tokyo. Europe and North America require at least one stop. Airport taxi to Seminyak: IDR 100,000–130,000 fixed rate. To Ubud: IDR 350,000–450,000. Grab works from the designated pickup zone.

📱

Ride-Hailing Apps

Gojek and Grab are cheap and reliable in Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, and Ubud. Bike rides around Seminyak: IDR 12,000–25,000. Near some temples, drivers cannot pick you up due to local taxi associations — walk 200–300m out and order from there.

🛵

Renting a Scooter

IDR 60,000–100,000 per day. Technically requires an international driving permit covering motorcycles. If you scratch it, you pay. Helmets are legally required. South Bali main roads are manageable; mountain roads up to Kintamani require actual experience. Do not attempt this for the first time on a Balinese road.

🚗

Private Driver for the Day

IDR 500,000–700,000 ($31–44) for 8–10 hours including fuel. Split between 2–4 people, this is excellent value. Drivers know the back roads and wait while you look around. Ask your accommodation for a personal referral — it is almost always someone they trust.

Bali Travel Guide: Budget & Daily Costs in 2026

Costs have risen since 2023, especially in Canggu and Seminyak. The flat IDR 150,000 tourist tax adds to day-one costs. That said, Bali remains genuinely affordable once you are on the ground.

💰 Daily Budget Breakdown — Bali 2026

Category Budget Mid-Range Luxury
🏨 Accommodation $12–25/night $55–95/night $190–500+
🍽️ Food & Drink $8–15/day $25–50/day $80–150/day
🚗 Transport $4–8/day $15–25/day $40–80/day
🏟️ Activities $5–10/day $15–30/day $50–120+
🛍️ Shopping/Misc $5–10/day $10–20/day $30–60/day
📊 DAILY TOTAL $40–68 $120–220 $390+

💱

Skip the Airport Exchange

Rates at the airport desk are noticeably worse. Use a licensed money changer in Kuta or Seminyak (BMC and Central Kuta are reliable) or withdraw from a BNI / BRI ATM with a low foreign-transaction-fee card. Saves 5–8% on every exchange.

🍚

Eat at Actual Warungs

A nasi campur plate at a market warung costs IDR 15,000–25,000 (~$1–1.50). The same dish at a “local-style” restaurant aimed at tourists runs IDR 60,000–80,000. Same food, different tablecloth. Eat the tablecloth-free version at least once a day.

🏡

Book Villas, Not Hotels

A private pool villa for two in Ubud can cost less than a mid-range hotel room in Seminyak during shoulder season. Search “villa” on Agoda or Booking.com, filter for private pool. Especially true for groups of 3–4 splitting the cost.

Bali Travel Guide: What to Eat and Where to Find It

Balinese food is different from the Indonesian food most people have tried elsewhere. It is spicier, more aromatic, and — properly done — takes hours to prepare. Here are the six dishes I look for every time I am on the island.

Dish What It Is Where to Find It Price
Babi Guling Whole spit-roasted pig stuffed with turmeric and herbs. The skin should shatter. If it doesn’t, find a different warung. Ibu Oka, Ubud (touristy but good); better local versions around Gianyar market IDR 50–100k
Bebek Betutu Slow-cooked duck in banana leaf, buried in hot coals for 6–8 hours. Deeply spiced, falling-off-the-bone soft. Kedewatan Kusambi, Ubud. Order a day ahead from your hotel kitchen. IDR 80–150k
Nasi Campur Bali Rice with 5–6 small portions of different dishes arranged around it. The best “bit of everything” dish on the island. Any warung, morning market, or canteen. Point and pick. IDR 15–35k
Lawar Minced meat mixed with grated coconut, long beans, and raw blood in the traditional version. Not for the squeamish; very good. Local warungs only — rarely appears on tourist menus. Ask specifically. IDR 20–40k
Sate Lilit Spiced minced fish or pork wrapped around a lemongrass stalk and grilled. Lighter and more fragrant than standard satay. Street carts near temples in the afternoon. Ubud market stalls. IDR 5–10k per skewer
Kopi Bali Strong coarse-ground coffee brewed directly in the cup. Let the grounds settle. Do not stir. Do not drink to the bottom. Any warung. Skip the Luwak coffee tourist pitch — the animal welfare issues are real. IDR 8–15k

Bali Travel Guide: 7-Day Itinerary With Specific Places

This starts in Seminyak (days 1–2), moves to Ubud (days 3–5), then north (days 6–7). Can be reversed or cut to 5 days by dropping one day from the north. Both work fine.

1

Day 1 — Land, Settle, Seminyak Beach

Morning/Afternoon: Arrive, check in, do nothing ambitious.
Evening: Walk to Seminyak Beach for the sunset — 10 minutes from most hotels. Dinner at Merah Putih if budget allows (IDR 200,000–350,000 per person; reserve ahead). Otherwise Naughty Nuri’s Warung does excellent ribs and a well-built martini for half the price.

2

Day 2 — Seminyak Market + Tanah Lot

Morning: Seminyak market on Jalan Raya Seminyak — arrives early, winds down by 9am.
Afternoon: Grab or scooter to Tanah Lot, arriving around 3:30pm. Stay for sunset (~6:15pm in shoulder season).
Evening: La Lucciola on the beach for a sit-down dinner; Warung Sobat for cheaper Balinese food afterward.

3

Day 3 — Transfer to Ubud + Rice Terraces

Morning: Hire a driver to Ubud (IDR 350,000–450,000, ~1.5 hrs). Stop at Tegallalang en route — ask driver to arrive before 9am.
Afternoon: Walk the Campuhan Ridge Trail (free, 2km loop through farmland above the valley, easily accessible from town center).
Evening: Locavore if you booked weeks ahead. Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka if you did not.

4

Day 4 — Tirta Empul + Kintamani

Morning: Full day with your Ubud driver. Leave by 8am. Tirta Empul first (IDR 50,000 — join the purification queue if you want to, you will not regret it).
Afternoon: Up to Kintamani for lunch with a crater view of Mount Batur and the lake. Restaurants there are mediocre; order simply and eat for the view. Back through Tegallalang for a different angle in afternoon light.

5

Day 5 — Mount Batur Sunrise Trek

Pre-dawn: Leave accommodation at 2am for the 3am trailhead start. Summit in about 2 hours — eggs on volcanic steam vents, sunrise over the caldera. Down by 9am.
Afternoon: Sleep.
Evening: Ubud center: Monkey Forest Road night market, or the Kecak fire dance at Pura Dalem Ubud (IDR 100,000, starts 7:30pm).

6

Day 6 — North Bali: Munduk & Waterfalls

Morning: Drive north into the highlands. Munduk Moding Plantation (coffee and cocoa farm, free with minimum purchase).
Afternoon: Banyumala Twin Waterfall (IDR 20,000 entry, 20-minute walk through jungle). Stay in Munduk — Lumbung Sari homestay is excellent at ~IDR 250,000/night and rates drop sharply once you leave tourist corridors.

7

Day 7 — East Bali: Pura Lempuyang + Sidemen

Early morning: Pura Lempuyang (IDR 50,000). Arrive before 8am for the queue. Walk at least to the second level — the forest above the gate is the actual experience.
Afternoon: Back via Candidasa for lunch, through Sidemen rice fields, then south to Seminyak or Kuta for an early departure next morning.

➕ How to Extend Your Trip to 10 Days

Add Amed (east coast, best snorkeling in Bali, far fewer tourists than Nusa Dua), a full day exploring the Sidemen valley on foot, and an overnight in Candidasa for the quiet reef. The east of the island is what I recommend to anyone returning for a second or third time.

Bali Travel Guide: Safety & Practical Information

🛂

Visa on Arrival

Available to visitors from 100+ countries. Cost: IDR 500,000 (~$31). Valid 30 days, extendable once to 60 days at an immigration office. Check eligibility at imigrasi.go.id before assuming you qualify.

💧

Water & Food Safety

Do not drink tap water. Bottled 1.5L costs IDR 5,000–8,000 at convenience stores. Warungs that look rough are often fine; beach bars with full Western menus are sometimes not. Standard Bali belly: rehydration salts + a day of rice and bananas. See a doctor if it goes past 48 hours.

🛵

Scooter Safety

The roads kill people. Wear your own helmet. Do not ride after dark on unfamiliar mountain roads. Do not ride drunk. If a hire shop says you do not need a license, they are telling you what you want to hear, not what the law says.

🛕

Temple Etiquette

Cover shoulders and knees. A sarong is required at most sacred sites (IDR 10,000–20,000 at gate). Women who are menstruating are traditionally asked not to enter inner sanctums at some temples. A sign will make it clear — respect it.

⚠

Drug Laws

Indonesia’s drug laws are among the harshest in the world. Possession of small amounts can mean years in prison; trafficking can carry the death penalty. The Canggu party scene creates an impression of tolerance. There is none. This has ended careers and lives and continues to.

📞

Emergency Numbers

Police: 110. Ambulance: 118. Tourist police (English): +62 361 754 599. BIMC Hospital Kuta: +62 361 761 263. Travel insurance with medical evacuation is not optional — serious cases are evacuated to Singapore.

Bali Travel Guide: Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I actually need in Bali?+
Seven to ten days is the sweet spot for a first visit covering South Bali, Ubud, and something from the north or east. Five days works if you stay in one area and do not try to see everything. Under four nights is too rushed — traffic between areas eats into sightseeing time significantly.
Is Bali safe for solo female travelers?+
Yes, generally. Ubud is very safe. Kuta and Seminyak require the same judgment you would apply in any beach nightlife area anywhere in the world. Use ride-hailing apps after dark rather than flagging random taxis. The risks are the same as for any traveler: scooter accidents, stomach illness, and petty theft.
What is the Bali tourist tax and how do I pay it?+
Since February 2024, all international visitors pay IDR 150,000 (~$10 USD) on entry. Pay online via the Love Bali website before flying, or at kiosks in the arrivals hall at DPS airport. Keep the receipt — some attractions check it. Indonesian citizens and domestic visitors are exempt.
What is the best area to stay in for a first trip to Bali?+
Seminyak is the easiest base — good restaurants, beach access, central location. Ubud is better if you care more about culture than beach. Canggu attracts younger long-stay travelers and digital nomads but has become noticeably more expensive than Seminyak for comparable rooms over the past two years.
How expensive is Bali? What does a typical day cost?+
On a tight budget, $40–68 per day covers a guesthouse, warung meals, a scooter rental, and entry fees. Mid-range travelers spending $120–220/day get a private pool villa, some restaurant dinners, and private drivers. Luxury is $390 and up, driven mostly by villa and beach-club costs in South Bali.
Is Bali too touristy now? Is it worth visiting in 2026?+
Parts of it, yes. Kuta has been fully absorbed into the global tourist machine for at least 20 years. But the highlands around Munduk, the east near Sidemen, and most of the north coast are still quiet. The island covers around 5,780 square kilometers and crowds concentrate in a small southwestern corridor. Drive 30 minutes inland from Ubud and you feel like you are somewhere else entirely.
Do I need a visa or vaccinations for Bali?+
Visa on Arrival (IDR 500,000, ~$31) is available for visitors from 100+ countries. No vaccinations are required for entry, but being current on Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus is advisable. Dengue is present year-round — use repellent consistently, especially at dawn and dusk. Travel insurance with medical evacuation is essential, not optional.
Bali vs Lombok — which is better for a first trip?+
Bali for a first trip to the region — more infrastructure, more to see, easier to get around without planning every detail in advance. Lombok for a second trip or for people who specifically want fewer tourists, better surf at Desert Point (considered one of the world’s best left-hand barrels), and the Gili Islands with a shorter boat crossing. The two are 30 minutes apart by fast boat.
