GaudĂ’s Barcelona, Catalonia
Barcelona works because it refuses to be just one thing. The Gothic Quarter is a maze of medieval stone streets barely wide enough for two people to pass. A ten-minute walk away, Antoni GaudĂ’s Sagrada FamĂlia has been under construction since 1882 and, as of 2026, has finally reached its planned full height with the completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ — arguably the most historic year yet to see it. Park GĂĽell adds mosaic-covered terraces overlooking the city, and Barceloneta beach means the Mediterranean is a metro ride from the museums.
The trade-off is crowds. Las Ramblas and the Sagrada FamĂlia queue can feel more like an airport than a city street in July and August, so booking timed tickets in advance for anything GaudĂ-related isn’t optional if the visit falls in peak season.
